Welcome to my blog! I created ‘The Ravel Out’ to capture my makes while I unravel my sewing ideas, one stitch at a time.

Ravel (out)

verb

  1. unravel; untangle.

  2. undo (twisted, knitted, or woven threads).

The Ilford Jacket Dress

The Ilford Jacket Dress

I think I may have succeeded in making my most versatile garment yet! Not only will it be worn all year round, it can be styled in so many ways. The possibilities are endless for this piece.

Fabric Details

I won this beautiful black Repreve Stretch Denim fabric via a contest hosted by Sitka Fabrics on Instagram. Fabric content: 68% cotton, 30% recycled poly, 2% lycra. Once I received it, I knew I wanted to make something that would last forever in my closet. I knew pants was not an option for me (I only own one pair of jeans because I don’t love pants and try to avoid wearing them as much as possible) so making a jacket made the most sense.

If you know me, you know my #1 inspiration is Pinterest. After I had decided to make a jacket, a denim dress popped up on my feed while I was scrolling and that’s when I knew I must make a jacket and a dress in one.

Pattern Details

I used the Ilford Jacket pattern by Friday pattern Company. This pattern features drop shoulders, multiple sleeve and pocket options so it was perfect for what I wanted to achieve.

  • My measurements: Bust - 40”, Waist - 34”, Hips - 45”

  • Size sewn - Medium

  • I made the long jacket version with the boxy sleeve option and hand-warmer pockets.

Modifications

  • I lengthened the long jacket version view by 7”

  • I lengthened the hand-warmer pockets by 2”

  • I shortened the sleeves and rolled it up to make a fake cuff

  • I made a matching belt (3x waist measurement)

Sewing Tips

Do not use jean buttons that have a plastic shank. Go with all metal jean buttons. I learned the hard way that they are not durable and can easily break. I will be replacing my buttons as one has already fallen off.

I am excited to wear the heck out of this jacket dress!

Happy Sewing,

Sylvia XOXO
