Welcome to my blog! I created ‘The Ravel Out’ to capture my makes while I unravel my sewing ideas, one stitch at a time.

Ravel (out)

verb

  1. unravel; untangle.

  2. undo (twisted, knitted, or woven threads).

Twist Back Top - Pattern Hack

Twist Back Top - Pattern Hack

Who knew a simple yet ‘sexy’ hack would get me excited to blog again? Well, today I am back to share more details about this glorious top I made as part of a ‘hackathon’ challenge on IG. Let’s get into it!

Pattern: Mia Crop Top by Tammy Handmade

Size Range: 39” to 49” bust (size 6 to 24)

Size Made: Size 14 (the chart put me at size 16 but I took finished garment measurements into consideration). For reference, my measurements are: 41” bust, 34.5” waist, 44.5” hips.

Fabric: Crepe knit.

Hot tip! Make sure your fabric has enough stretch. The pattern recommends knits with about 6% elastane

Adjustments I made to this pattern:

  • Straps - I reduced the size as I wanted skinny straps for this look

  • Twist back - Instead of sewing the two back pieces together (one acting as the main fabric, and the other as lining), I decided to make tubes out of them and simply loop them together as pictured above. It was that simple!

  • Circle skirt - I cut out a simple half circle skirt, attaching the front pieces while leaving the back detached.

Things I’d do differently:

There are a couple things that did not go right with this version…

  • Fabric: My crepe knit only had 2% elastane (the pattern recommends 6%). This makes it quite difficult to put on and take off. The pro is that it gives me enough support that I don’t need to wear a bra. However, it is too much support so my boobs feel a bit smooshed. I’ll hunt for the right fabric stretchy and redo this at some point.

  • Straps - I adore the skinny straps and think they are the right size for my version. However, they keep twisting around. I’m not sure if it’s because of the limited stretch or not but I plan to do a bit more research on how I can avoid that from happening next time.

  • Armscye - I’ll raise the armsyce a tad bit next time (maybe an inch or less) as there is a very slight potential of showing side boob. I’d prefer to completely eliminate the possibility ha!

I think making this with the right fabric and stretch percentage will make a big difference. I’d love to make a dress version of this. I mean how cute would that be? The Mia Crop Top is such a simple pattern with lots of opportunity to make it your own which made this challenge pretty fun. I’m definitely not sewing as much as I used to but I am looking forward to sharing more on what I’ve been making this summer so stay tuned.

Happy Sewing!

Sylvia XOXO
